The Havanese Bichon is a dog that looks like a powder puff. This cute Havanese is also called the Havana lapdog. An inquisitive and docile dog with a cheerful and benevolent character. The Havana lapdog is pure Cuban by origin. The breed is considered the national Cuban breed.

Havanese History

According to the official version, the Havana lapdogs were the result of a cross between Maltese lapdogs and Bichons from Bologna, brought to the Maltese Islands by Spanish colonizers and settlers. But there is no exact data on the history of the breed. The dog was very popular with the Cuban aristocracy. However, at the beginning of the last century, the breed went through a serious crisis. It did not disappear only thanks to lovers of the Havana Bichons from the USA, who actively bred gentle lap dogs.

Another version is known: the ancestors of today's Havana lapdog - Bichon Tenerife, were brought to the Canary Islands, later became extinct, leaving offspring formed as a result of crossing the species with other types of lapdogs and even poodles. The Havana lapdog came to Europe at the end of the twentieth century and immediately found fans. The dog has become a regular participant in all kinds of exhibitions and a favorite of girls who adore indoor dogs. Modern Havana bichons differ from lapdogs before the early twentieth century, there is a new, Americanized lapdog. The standards are very different from the previous ones.

Havanese Character

* Havanese have an open nature, which is very rare for small dogs.

* Lapdogs are easy to train and always show a playful mood. It is no coincidence that they were previously actively used in circus programs.

* They are affectionate with children, play with them for an infinitely long time, are closely attached to the owners.

* Dogs are ready to accompany their owners anytime, anywhere.

* In the house, the Havana lapdog gets along with people and other animals.

* The dog is finally socialized, without human society it feels serious discomfort. Smart dogs love praise, instantly react to affectionate words, wagging their tail and jumping up and down. They are sensitive to negative feedback when they scold. Sensitive, able to take offense.

As befits an island dog, the Havanese Bichon loves water, loves to swim. The dog is well trained, it is possible to do agility. A natural mind allows you to quickly learn tricks.

Havanese displays an imposing appearance, while retaining the functions of a dog. A sensitive watchman. Previously, the lapdog was used as a signal shepherd dog. She guarded the herd, and when strangers approached, she notified those around her with a loud bark. If the Havanese Bichon feels danger, without thinking twice, shows fearlessness and determination, a fearless dog lives in a small body.

*Havanese feels great in any environment, if the condition is met - a faithful friend and companion - a person - is nearby.

Lovers of small lapdogs will find in the Havana lapdog an ideal, cheerful companion who loves with boundless love. The Havana lapdog is quite suitable for the "standards" of a glamorous dog. But the character, simple, cheerful, is far from aristocratic. Due to its cheerful nature, liveliness and openness, the lapdog is often used as a "therapist" in special medical animal therapy programs.

Maintenance and care

The Havanese Bichon is a rare long-haired dog that does not have its hair cut. To keep your dog healthy, carefully monitor the condition of the coat. Caring for a Havana lapdog:

* regular brushing

* bathing as it gets dirty

* selection of the correct and quality shampoos, balms and conditioners.

In a healthy dog, a non-intensive molt occurs during the year, with the exception of autumn-spring. The dog does not have a specific smell that accompanies other dogs. Wool allows you to endure hot climates, but in winter in Russia, pets need warm coats.

1-  Ear care is performed regularly. The hair inside must be removed, otherwise it will clog the ear canals, the earwax is removed with cotton swabs previously moistened with lotions.

2- The claws are trimmed neatly once a month, be careful not to injure the inside. It is enough to cut 1-2 mm.

3- Tears are gently removed with cotton pads.

Havana Bichon puppies require more grooming. Stubborn little dogs simply cannot stand loneliness and constantly require attention. We'll have to constantly occupy them or keep them nearby.

Training

The training of the Havanese dog is that the dog unquestioningly obeys the owner's commands. Any dog, even a decorative and indoor lapdog, is obliged to know and follow forbidding commands. Obliged to know the resting place.

The Havanese Bichon breed is easy to train and train. But the owners of lapdogs should remember that miniature dogs have high intelligence, cunning. If the owner gives slack during training and follows the pet's lead, the dog will instantly remember the mistake. Then it will be much more difficult to subject the pet to training.

The Havanese Bichon dog breed is indifferent to walks. In some cases, they even prefer to sit at home, but the dog is not infantile. A short walk is enough to satisfy natural needs, but if the family gathers on the street, the lapdog will happily go along with the people, encouraging the household to play a variety of games.
